The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had groomed and silenced his victim from a very young age, and even raped her when her mother was in the house, a court heard
A depraved man has been jailed after he subjected his step-daughter to years of rape and abuse as he “treated her like a sex slave” and forced her to have a number of his children.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had groomed and silenced his victim from a very young age, and even raped her when her mother was in the house, a court heard.
He controlled the victim “sexually, psychologically and monetarily” instead of being interested in her well-being and development, and “robbed her of her childhood”, a judge told him as he was jailed for 20 years.
Following the sentencing campaigners praised the bravery of the victim, who provided the evidence that put her attacker behind bars, the Derby Telegraph reports.
In a victim impact statement, she said: “He has ruined my life.”
Derby Crown Court heard shocking details of the man’s crimes against the victim, who was abused over a long period from when she was just a young schoolgirl.
Jonathan Straw, prosecuting, said the man abused the girl at the home they shared in Derby.
He said by the time she was a teenager she gave birth to the first of a number of children he fathered with her.
Mr Straw said the victim moved out of the home, but the attacks didn’t stop, adding: “He would deliberately go and see her when he knew she was alone.
He said the girl lied about the identity of the father of her children but finally disclosed her abuse to a social worker.
DNA tests confirmed that her abuser was the father of her children and he was arrested and charged with the rapes, attempted rapes and sexual assaults on his victim.
The defendant pleaded guilty to rape, attempted rape and subjecting the girl to years of sexual assaults.
The court heard he had one relevant previous conviction for indecent assault on a different girl who was 14 at the time.
Jailing the man, Judge Robert Egbuna said the defendant “treated her as his sex slave” and controlled her “sexually, psychologically and monetarily”.
He added: “You robbed her of her childhood. You stole her life from her.
“You would rape her any time you were alone with her, even when her mother was in the house.
“And when you were done you would go downstairs, sit on the sofa and play on the PlayStation, when the young girl you had abused was dealing with what you had done to her.”
The judge told the man he would serve at least two-thirds of his sentence and be released when a parole board considered it was safe to do so.
When the 20 years is up, the defendant will be on licence for a further eight years. He will be on the sex offenders’ register for life.
Martin Elwick, defending, said his client had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity “saving her from coming to court and reliving her history”.
An NSPCC spokesman praised the victim’s incredible courage in speaking out and bringing her abuser to justice.
The spokesman said: “The devastating impact of these years of appalling abuse cannot be underestimated, so it is vital she gets the necessary support to help her begin to recover.
“We hope this case sends a message to survivors of abuse that it is never too late to come forward. They will be listened to, no matter who the abuser is.”
